Browsing the Modesto Bee - Today's Edition

While the text is fully searchable, the database only provides images of pages and articles only, making it a little cumbersome to browse by day and then to get to a specific article.

Browsing Today's Edition

  • At the main screen, click on the desire date.
    • Today's content is usually loaded before 8 am each day..
  • Click on the page you want.
  • To get from a "headline" page to the full-text:
    • The arrows under a fist/early-page headline will not link to the article. 
    • You need to use the search feature to move from a first/early page headline to the full article.
      • Choose the magnifying glass (above the page display) to search.
      • Choose Search Issue.
      • Type the article title into the search box.

Searching

  • You can search to locate specific pages / sections with specific keywords using the search functions.
  • You cannot navigate by clicking in an image.  The the article text does not appear immediately after the headline, you may need to search that day's content to access the full article.

Search Tips:

In the main search box:

  • Provides a basic keyword search, including the full-text of articles.
  • Limit results by date range or specific date.
  • Uses a Boolean "and" between the words unless you use a phrase or other Boolean operator.
  • Use quotation marks for exact phrase searching:   "cats and dogs"
  • Supports Booleans (and, not, or).

Advanced Search

  • Searching a specific field returns no results in "Today's Edition " / image search. Use Select a Field (optional) instead. 
  • You can search within a date range.
  • You can use Booleans between words (AND / OR / NOT) and/or search boxes.  

OneSearch Coverage:

OneSearch lists the main link to Modesto Bee / Today's Edition only.  

OneSearch does not search or link to individual articles.

 

Citing, Saving, and Linking - Modesto Bee Today's Edition (Newsbank)

The following tools are available when viewing a specific article (image or text).

Cite the page/article:

 Cite the source via Newsbank

  • Click the citation icon.
  • Choose the desired style or tool. 
    • For example, APA style.
  • Please note:
  • The Newsbank citation tool does not include the author or article title for "Today's Edition" / images.
  • If you use the citation tool, be sure to note the article title, and the author, and manually add them to your citation.

Downloading an article:

  • Click the download icon.
  • Choose full page or select clip.
  • For "Today's Edition" / image database, this will export an image PDF of displayed article/page or selected clip.
  • If you want your local PDF to recognize text (e.g. copy and paste text from the PDF), you will need to "OCR" (scan for text) using a program like Adobe to turn the image into computer-readable text.

Email

Email an article / Newsbank icon

  • Using the email function will only email a link to the article that only works on the Stan State campus.
  • To email an image or article text, download / save the article first, and then use your personal email to send the PDF / text.
